Past student production analysis – Face of Fear

Media Language:
The trailer is mainly set in a park that has one small house/ garage it is based around. The park itself represents loneliness, solitude and enigma. The setting has many trees as it is a typical genre convention such as The Blair Witch Project, this builds on its isolated affect. The lighting that is used is low key to create a sinister atmosphere and suspense. Though, high key is used too, to emphasis on the more dramatic scenes with the trailer. The use of sound is not apparent however, one may assume it is more high pitched and loud during the violent scenes.
The typography used in the trailer is dark colours this connotes; fear, death and violence which occurs within the trailer so the scenes and typography works well together.
The props are the main feature which creates that whole affect of a horror film and is used to suture the audience. E.g. weapons to indicated violence and fire which connotes death as in some cultures it is used to send off a body etc.

Institution:
This films institution is Warner Bros which is one of the major film studios, it is a subsidiary of Time Warner, with its headquarters in Burbank, California and New York City. Warner Bros. Founded in 1918 by Jewish immigrants from Poland, Warner Bros. is the third-oldest American movie studio in continuous operation, after Paramount Pictures.

Genre:
The genre of the trailer is horror which is the most frightening genre for an audience. We can identify this genre from the typical use of genre mis-en-scene.

Representation:
The victims are represented typically as scared, which we see from the different shots of camera angles and movement used. The villain is represented as fearful; this is seen from his behaviour and image seen across to the audience.

Audience:
The audience for this trailer, looks as if it’s for both males and females. Though, ‘stereotypically’ males may find it more assuming form the violence whereas females would find it fearful and daunting. The age rating would be 18- from the violence seen. The secondary audience for the trailer would be people who generally enjoy and find entertainment in horror films.
